IC GP40 3074
Description:
Illinois Central Railroad GP40 3074 at Covington, Tennessee on April 4, 1984, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 3074 was built in February 1970 (c/n 36170), later became ICG 3074, then HLCX 3074, then MCKX 4302, then PAL 2109. In this photo it shows a couple of unusual charateristics from a stock GP40. Unusual for the IC was the dynamic brakes, which appeared on IC GP40 numbers 3060 - 3074. Also unusual was the water level sight glass and the L shaped Engineer's front window.

It appears to have been shopped during 1974, emerging as 3076. One source has it listed as a GP40A, so there may have been modifications made during the shopping.

IC E7 4017
Description:
IC E7 4017 at about 22nd Street in Chicago, Illinois on October 14, 1963, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in June 1948 (c/n 5150) on EMD Order E873, it is seen here on the south lead of Central Station on the "jumpover" embankment crossing over the IC's Electric Division's suburban tracks. The numberboards are unusual for and E7, which are flush, unlike the box-type numberboards characteristic of production E7's. I have seen another photo of #4017 on this site, showing the box numberboards, so perhaps this is a wreck rebuild, I don't know for sure. It was retired in March 1971 and scrapped.

IC E8 4022
Description:
IC E8 4022 southbound at about 22nd Street, Chicago, Illinois, October 14, 1963, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in April 1951 (c/n 14083) on EMD Order 2037, it eventually was leased to Amtrak retaining road number 4022, scrapped during 1980. Thanks to Bob Lalich, I can identify the embankment. It is seen here on the "jumpover" tracks leading south out of Central Station. Rather than have interlocking to cross the IC's passenger trains over the Electric Division's tracks, the IC built an earthen hill that lifted trains over. The Electric Division's tracks can be see (somewhat) in the lower left, crossing under this train and will be on the other side.

ICG SD40 6005
Description:
ICG SD40 6005, Paducah, Kentucky, June 25, 1986, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Pretty clean paint, I'm going to suggest that it had been shopped recently. Built as IC 6005 in December 1967 (c/n 33249) on EMD Order 5732, it became ICG 6005, was rebuilt into SD40-2R in June 1996 becoming IC 6005 again, retired on March 11, 2009, declared surplus, and became ASDX 6005. As I recall, this is new power for a coal train sitting on the track to the right. These locomotives will replace several GP10's that have already been cut off the coal train and are on a siding out of the frame in the lower left about a half mile.

IC SD40A 6007
Description:
Illinois Central Railroad SD40A 6007 at Paducah, Kentucky on June 25, 1986, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in August 1969 (c/n 34940) on EMD Order 5743, it became ICG 6007, and was rebuilt into a SD40-2R and became IC 6007 (again). The SD40A was unique to the IC/ICG, only 18 (#'s 6006-6023) were built at the request of the IC. The idea was to carry a 5000 gallon fuel tank and, to accommodate that, EMD used the longer SDP40/45 frame. The SD40A introduced the water level sight glass, a characteristic of the Dash 2 line of EMD products.

Note that it has an L shaped Engineer's window, which it will lose during rebuilding. Looks like fresh paint on those front handrail stantions, perhaps there has been a recent repair.

Description:
ICG GP8 7709, Paducah, Kentucky, June 25, 1986, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Number 7709 was built in June 1952 as P&LE GP7 5722 (later renumbered to P&LE 1515, c/n 16349) on EMD Order 6369. During 1974 it was rebuilt at the ICG's Paducah, Kentucky Shops to GP8 7709. It is seen here cutting off a coal train. The 7709 and associates will pull ahead and off on a side track. The 6005 will then pull up and couple onto 7709's train and leave town. I'm not sure why this happened, since 6005 has cut off a coal train (seen in the background) except to speculate that 7709 had some ailing power in its consist, or perhaps then ICG needed to balance power on its system.

CC GP8 7992
Description:
Chicago Central & Pacific Railroad GP8 7992, near Carol Stream, Illinois on October 22, 1986, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built by GMD in Canada for the Quebec North Shore & Labrador as QNSL GP7 101 (c/n A411) on Order C151. It was rebuilt at Paducah, Kentucky during 1972, becoming ICG GP8 7992. On December 24, 1985, most of the ICG's Iowa Division became the Chicago Central & Pacific, and the CC acquired some of the ICG's rolling stock, including this locomotive (eventually renumbered to 1592) and trailing caboose 199523. The IC repurchased the CC in 1996 and operated it as a subsidiary until the IC itself was purchased by CN. The company continues to exist as a subsidiary of the Grand Trunk Corporation. At some point CC 7992/1592 became WATX 1592.

Description:
Illinois Central (ICG) GP10 8005 in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in August 1978, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in April 1954 as IC GP9 9005, it was rebuilt during 1972 by the Paducah Shops to GP10 8005, sold to the CC as 8005, later renumbered to CC 1705, returning to the IC and renumbered to 8402. It is seen here eastbound at the east end of the ICG's Iowa Division, also known as the Saint Charles Air Line, climbing up over the downtown Chicago area and will shortly be southbound on the ICG's suburban Electric Division for the final leg of the trip to Markham Yard on the south side of Chicago.

IC GP10 8025
Description:
IC GP10 8025, Chicago, Illinois, August 1979, photo by Chuck Zeiler. I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. This locomotive was built in May 1954 as IC GP9 9025 (c/n 18822) on EMD Order 5307. Tom Parker's IC web site (illinoiscentral.net) indicates that 9025 was rebuilt in 1968 to GP10 8025. It is the only high short hood GP10 I ever saw out of the Paducah Shops. It later became GMSR 8025, then MSRC 1079, then OMLX 1079, and was later scrapped at Wichita, Kansas in 2001. It is seen westbound on the Saint Charles Air Line. I had walked over this bridge to photograph an abandon turntable when I heard this train, turned and shot this photo. The bridge passes over the leads to Dearborn Station. I'm not sure who's turntable it was, but it was just south of LaSalle Street Station. My best guess is that the Rock Island used it to turn steam locomotives assigned to commuter trains.
