Title:
CB&Q E9 9993
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9993 westbound at Naperville, Illinois on April 28, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The CB&Q Employees Timetable No. 10 had just gone into effect on Sunday, April 25, 1965, as had Daylight Savings Time, giving me the opportunity to capture the Dinkys in better light. I walked east about two miles from Naperville toward Lisle, and started back, photographing each Dinky as it passed by. Starting around 3:00 PM and continuing until around 7:00 PM, the Burlington would dispatch about 17 Dinkys, the California Zephyr, and the Denver Zephyr past this spot, and a few eastbound trains would also pass by, but the light was not right for eastbound photography. My goal was to photograph two westbound Dinkys side by side at 60 mph, which sometimes happened here if one or the other was slightly off schedule.

CB&Q E9 9993
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9993 westbound on Train #25, the North Coast Limited, at Eola Illinois on January 1, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 9993 was built during August 1954 (c/n 19632) on EMD Order 2065A for 6 E9's (9990-9995), and after March 2, 1970 it became BN 9993. It was sold to the West Suburban Mass Transit District on August 18, 1972, sent to Morrison Knudsen in Boise, Idaho for rebuilding into a E9Am (or E9Au, I'm not sure), returning to BN rails as 9923 after July 1973. Note that the second unit has three red stripes, unique to the CB&Q E7's with small numberboards, the last unit is an E7 with the large numberboards and four red stripes.

CB&Q E9 9994
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9994 westbound at Naperville, Illinois on December 8, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in August 1954 (c/n 19633), this locomotive became BN 9994 on March 2, 1970. It was sold to the West Suburban Mass Transit District and leased back to the BN on August 18, 1972. It was rebuilt by Morrison Knudsen during May 1973, returned as 9924, and was retired July 1992. On the left side of this photo is the East End Way Freight waiting for this Dinky (CB&Q term for commuter train) to clear. The way freight will back onto the main and cross over all three main tracks to work Moser Lumber, then continue east to work the other industries between here and Congress Park, returning to Eola later in the day.

CB&Q E9 9994
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9994 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on July 30, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. It is fortunate I had the presence of mind to mark the slide as "Girl Scout Special". I certainly would not have recalled that detail 40 years later. This locomotive was built in August 1954 (c/n 19633) on EMD Order 2065, became BN 9994 sometime after the March 2, 1970 merger, sold to the West Suburban Mass Transit District August 18, 1972, was rebuilt by Morrison Knudsen in May 1973, returning as 9924 and leased to the BN for operation.

It pulled commuter trains until July 1992. It appears that this man enjoys his work.

CB&Q E9 9995
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9995 westbound at Naperville, Illinois on March 10, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Baggage cars were not typically part of the consist of the Dinkys (commuter trains) on the CB&Q. Growing up in Naperville, I was once a paperboy, and had first hand knowledge of the purpose of the baggage cars. The Sunday supplements (the funnies, magazine section, and advertising inserts) were printed ahead of time, and sent to the local news agencies for insertion into the Sunday paper usually on Saturday evening. One of my jobs as a paperboy was to go to the Naperville station and collect the supplements which generally arrived on a Wednesday or Thursday. If there were a lot of supplements, usually around holidays, the Burlington would have to add a baggage car to handle the load. There was a minor problem with this, from my point of view. As the train arrived, the baggage handler would open the door and when he saw the platform, he began kicking out the bundles of supplements before the train stopped. At first I thought the guy was just a jerk, but I later found out that this was to prevent delay of the train. If the train was delayed, the conductor would have to fill out a Delay Report, which he would rather not do. If the wire binding did not hold the bundles together as they were kicked out, the paperboy (me) would have to go along the right-of-way and collect all the loose supplements.

CB&Q E9 9995
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9995 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on April 19, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in August 1954 (c/n 1;634) on EMD Order 2065A for six E9's (#'s 9990-9995), this was the highest numbered E9, and for that matter, the highest numbered locomotive on the CB&Q diesel roster. It was not the last E9 delivered/ the following year the CB&Q ordered 10 more E9's (#'s 9985A-B through 9989A-B), the CB&Q's final passenger locomotive acquisition. This one went on to become BN 9995 and after rebuilding by Morrison-Knudsen became BN 9925, retired from Chicago commuter service in 1992. Seen here in charge of one of the daily CB&Q Dinkys (commuter train), it has in tow five of the single level coaches, a pair of Budd bi-level stainless steel coaches, and a power car converted from one of the single level coaches. Within a few years, all the single level coaches would be retired, the power cars would survive a few more years to power solid trains of bi-level Budd coaches until 26 E8's and E9's were rebuilt by M-K with Head End Power.

CB&Q E9 9995
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9995 westbound at Naperville, Illinois on April 26, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Although this locomotive was the highest numbered E9 on the CB&Q's diesel roster, it was not the last one delivered. The Burlington psaced it final passenger locomotive order in late 1955 for 10 more E9's, and since these units would not fit above 9995, they were numbered in a slot reserved for the FW&D, 9985A-B to 9989A-B.
