Album Info:For the first time in 10 years the CSX OCS would be embarking westward over the CSX Indianapolis Line Subdivision. Recently, CSX had repainted 2 of the F40PH's from Amtrak and the entire passenger car set into a very sleek B&O Liverly. Unfortunately for everyone west of Cleveland, the lead unit (CSX 1) began to experience PTC issues so they tacked on a pair of (surprisingly fresh) GEVO's on the head end. Despite this, I decided it was worth a go anyway, as the tower in Union City was to be moved to the community park in the following months, and the only chance I would have to get some last photos of it would be this day. I decided to follow the Indy Line eastward and I was quite impressed with my results! Enjoy!

CSX 721
Title:  CSX 721
Description:  With the hoopla about the CSX OCS running over the Indy Line today, I decided, despite the F40PHs trailing, it was worth it to run down to Union City to grab some final shots of the tower before its relocation. The OCS was slated to be into Anderson shortly before noon, which allowed some other traffic to try to fit in to the window before it arrived. I had just missed CSX Q364 heading east as I arrived in to town, but almost immediately the trilight heads went yellow and soon I was greeted by an eastbound N312 empty coal train crossing the border into Ohio from Indiana, passing by the tower and through the trilights. Westbound CSX Q131 had been cleared on up Track 2 to head west toward Indianapolis.

Title:  UP 8473
Description:  Now back over on the Indiana side, CSX Q131 rocks west by the tower. UP engines are almost the only foreign power that can be seen leading on the Indy Line these days.

CSX 8024
Title:  CSX 8024
Description:  The crackling of another eastbound came over the scanner so I decided to head back over into Ohio and sit across the street from the grain elevator. Soon enough I picked out the symbol, CSX Q008, the hottest train on the Indy Line. They were giving an engine number, but I only interpreted the first 3 numbers, 802. I was quite surprised when I got outside and heard the recognizable sound of an EMD Prime Mover and a sharp K5LA. CSX 8024, a veteran L&N SD40-2, was leading todays UPS Mail toward New Jersey. An almost unheard of sight in 2021. SD40-2s are pretty commonplace leaders on CSX still, but hardly ever do they get tacked on priority trains such as Q008. This ultimately would go down as the best train of the day.

Into the Distance!
Title:  Into the Distance!
Description:  The OCS shoots westward toward Muncie, Anderson, and eventually Indianapolis. A very sleek looking set for sure! With that being said I decided I would continue to follow the Indy Line, as I havent shot the trilights along the line in quite a while. I decided I would go as far east as Quincy and come back west. Hoping for some more good action!

CSX 8134
Title:  CSX 8134
Description:  Since most of the traffic had gone through before the OCS, the Indy Line had returned to its normal "deadness" as I call it. But I continued to follow it anyway just in case something popped up. I reached Ansonia and found CSX 8134 idling at the RJ Corman interchange.

CSX 6901
Title:  CSX 6901
Description:  Finally, after a little more driving, I found a green signal at the intermediates just west of Russia, OH and decided to set up shop at Clopay Building Products to get a nice wide angle of the train passing the water tower, the grain elevator, and the steeple of St. Remy Catholic church in the background. After a little more waiting, CSX J798 screams west toward Ansonia with a GP40-2 doing the honors.

CSX 3373
Title:  CSX 3373
Description:  The next train didnt show until I was well into Sidney. I knew that I had a small parade of eastbounds coming, and I figured the first one had to be close, so I decided to set up shop on the Spruce Road overpass in Sidney, as it is hardly traveled. Within minutes, the headlight of CSX G370 popped into view and soon passed underneath me.

CSX 3286
Title:  CSX 3286
Description:  I heard ID Dispatch talking with CSX Q217 and I knew that they would make the turn south at Sidney, so I decided to get east of town to try to grab them at the intermediates outside of town. I thought they were way closer than I had first though so I settled for the train coming around the curve at Pasco-Mantra Road. I was not aware, however, that the train was only moving about 30 MPH, which is what the defect detector read their speed at.

KCS 4177
Title:  KCS 4177
Description:  I finally reached Quincy where I had planned on stopping before heading back west. The plan was to try to catch the IORY LSL crossing the diamond before turning back around. I had gotten into town around the usual time frame that they cross the B Line, so I was a little worried that I may have missed it. I knew I had some eastbounds coming though. CSX Q132 was running around a slower moving unit grain train in Sidney, so I set up shop to wait on them. Soon, CSX Q132 showed up with a nice pair of KCS units leading the way, the 2nd of which was 1 of 3 grey KCS AC4400CWs left in the grey scheme. What a catch!

IORY 3489
Title:  IORY 3489
Description:  As soon as G456 passed, IC Dispatch allowed maintenance crews onto the Indy Line. The LSL still hadnt passed through yet. A Facebook friend who was on the IC desk this morning told me that she had not had IORY key her up so I knew there was no way they couldve gone through. I decided to go north to see if they had at least left Lima. I got no further than two miles out of Quincy and boom! There it was! They had gotten immediate clearance over the CSX, so I raced back to the diamond to get them passing the signal. Todays leader was IORY 3489, followed by 3 Railtex Red SD40-2s including the tunnel motor 2nd. What I wouldve done to have seen the tunnel motor on the point, but I will settle for the 3489.

CSX 4011
Title:  CSX 4011
Description:  And just like that it was time to head back west. Although I didnt get very far, as I heard the crackle of a westbound come over the scanner. I decided to set up by the intermediates just east of Pemberton for a different signal shot (since I had shot the pair in Quincy already). Soon enough, the unmistakable sound of EMD prime movers could be heard in the distance, as CSX Q631 rocked westward with another fantastic SD40 variant leader, this time being a YN3 SD40-3. The train was absolutely hauling the mail and were cranked up around Notch 6-8 despite the train not being super long. So far an absolutely fantastic day of great leaders on the Indy Line! Not something I say very often these days.

CSX 120
Title:  CSX 120
Description:  Now back in Sidney, CSX X361 crosses the huge Big 4 Concrete Bridge over the Great Miami River. Due to a crew shortage on the Indianapolis Sub. This train was provided with a Toledo Sub Crew which took it out of Queensgate and made the turn east onto the Indy Line and went as far as Quincy before running around the whole train and heading back west. A very circuitous route, but you got to keep the freight moving!

CSX 400
Title:  CSX 400
Description:  I knew I had another eastbound coming, so I decided to go set up shop next to the sad looking NYC Depot in Sidney. I was absolutely shocked to find out that Youtube Railfan Milleniumforce was also down there waiting on the train. He was in town making his way back toward home after another one of his long Country-Wide tours and made a quiick day stop in Sidney to visit a family friend. Sure enough we grabbed an eastbound grain train passing the depot together, which I believe was symboled CSX G156. Always nice to see fellow railfans from out of state enjoying the same weird hobby I do.

CSX 3061
Title:  CSX 3061
Description:  A westbound that was not X361 came over the radio, so we decided to wait out to see what that was. They ended up coming around the bend as soon as the grain trains last car passed. The train came to a complete stop so I knew it would be making the turn south. Sure enough, once the light was given, I heard plain as day "CSX Q205" which is a train that continues south on the Toledo Sub. Alan and his friends decided to try to grab it on the Toledo Sub, where I decided to catch it with the G heads on the aluminum poll, since I knew this would more than likely be the final train I would see on the Indy Line. I knew there was a Q311 out there, but I wasnt sure how far away, and I knew for certain there were trains on the Toledo Sub, so from there I decided it was time to begin thinking about getting a little closer to home. The Indy Line provided the goods today, thats for sure!

CSX 3130
Title:  CSX 3130
Description:  As soon as the end of Q205 passed, I began my drive north along the Toledo Sub. I checked the signals at Swanders and sure enough they were green for a southbound. I was hoping that I would be able to get back to the CPLs, but I didnt have nearly enough time, as K596 reached me before I could even move. Ill certainly settle for a grain elevator shot any day!

CSX 5260
Title:  CSX 5260
Description:  Seconds after the last car of K596 passed, the CPLs went back to a yellow indication, so I knew I had enough time to try to get down to the CPLs. One of two brackets north of Cincinnati remains at Swanders, so I really wanted to get something passing it. It is quite a walk from the nearest road to the signals. So, I got all my equipment out and began making a B-Line toward the signals. Unfortunately I didnt get very far before the headlight of CSX Q143 popped up from over the rise. I was also completely unaware that the train would be running around the slower moving K train would be utilizing the track that I had planned to stand in the middle of. I did some very quick thinking, and decided to just stay where I was and take a very long shot and then hop into the ditch. Thankfully, it all worked out. Anything for the shot!

Title:  CSX 7793 and CSX 6494
Description:  While driving over Robb Yard on Robb Ave. I looked down to find another wacky surprise. There sitting in the yard was one of a handful of reactivated Dash 8s with a southbound waiting on a new crew. Later on I figured out that this was CSX Q511, and the train with the Geeps sitting beside it was the D743 power for this week. This is the second Dash 8 Ive shot leading since some of them came out of storage, and the first YN2 one. Ending the night off on a very positive note!

Description:  I never did find the CF&E train, but to compensate I did make a quick pit stop to grab the Van Wert Terminal Railway switcher. Title:  CFE 2097
Description:  I got reimbursed for not finding the train between Lima and Van Wert when I crossed the Decatur Branch and noticed that the FWDC was still in town. The normal pair of geeps pulled down by IM Power and I was able to get a decent shot with the internal flash. An absolutely spectacular day of railfanning. One that I figured would not completely go to plan. Documented some signals and got some fantastic catches. Until next time!
