Album Info:Here is a six-page article by William D. Volkmer entitled "The Pennsy At Northumberland: 1964-1968." It was published originally in the January 2004 issue of "Trains" magazine, pages 66-71. "In 1964, I was promoted by the Pennsylvania Railroad from locomotive foreman at the Canton (Ohio) Diesel Shop to motive power foreman at Northumberland Shop in east-central Pennsylvania." (Page 66) Also included are three photos taken in Glen Iron, on the Montandon Secondary Line.

Description:  Here is page one of a six-page article by William D. Volkmer entitled "The Pennsy At Northumberland: 1964-1968." It was published originally in the January 2004 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 66. Partial Caption: "Pennsy passenger train 570, the daytime Harrisburg-Buffalo run, rolls into Sunbury behind steam-generator equipped RS3 8445 (one of only two RS3s built with a high hood; the other is Western Maryland 192) and E8 4293." Engine #8445 is an AS-16MS built by the American Locomotive Company in December of 1953 and rated at 1,600 horsepower. Engine #4293 is an EP-22 built by GM-EMD as number "5893" in April of 1950, rated at 2,250 horsepower, and renumbered "4293" in preparation for the PRR-NYC merger. Note that the "A" in "PENNSYLVANIA" has been painted over with the new road number.

Description:  Here is page two of a six-page article by William D. Volkmer entitled "The Pennsy At Northumberland: 1964-1968." It was published originally in the January 2004 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 67. Bottom Photo Caption: "The Pennsy stored a number of steam locomotives at the Northumberland roundhouse pending disposition to museums, including Madison incline veteran 0-10-0T 'Reuben Wells,' now at the Children's Museum in Indianapolis." The "Reuben Wells" was built by the Madison & Indiana Railroad during 1868, specifically for use on its 5.89% upgrade between Madison and North Madison, Indiana. It's named after its designer, Mr. Reuben Wells.

Top Photo Caption: "Maid-of-all-work train S-97 trundles over the Wilkes-Barre Branch through Mocanaqua, Pa., on a fall day in 1964 behind GP9 7241. Engine #7241 is an EFS-17M built by GM-EMD in October of 1959 and rated at 1,750 horsepower. Bottom Photo Caption: "RS3 8836, still wearing its handrail-like trainphone antenna, visits South Williamsport with a tidy mainline local on March 22, 1965." Engine #8836 is an AS-16M built by the American Locomotive Company in November of 1951, rated at 1,600 horsepower, and retired in January of 1967.

Top Photo Caption: "Northumberland's roundhouse became a museum of sorts in the 1960s for a variety of preserved PRR steam power. In repose in January 1966 are a pair of 2-8-0s, H10s 7688 and H6b 2846, and E6s 4-4-2 460." Bottom Photo Caption: "Baldwin DS4-4-660 9113 looks fresh out of the paint shop on March 16, 1965, but thanks to its mechanical unreliability, it will be retired in a little more than a year." Engine #9113 is a BS-6A built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in August of 1948, rated at 660 horsepower, and retired in May of 1966 after just 18 years of revenue service.

Partially visible here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9595, a BF-16 built by Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton in April of 1951, rated at 1,600 horsepower, and retired in July of 1966 after just 15 years of revenue service. Also notable here is a map depicting the extent of Mr. Volkmer's area of responsibility.

Description:  Here is page six of a six-page article by William D. Volkmer entitled "The Pennsy At Northumberland: 1964-1968." It was published originally in the January 2004 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 71. Photo Caption: "A March 1965 afternoon finds Baldwin "Sharknose" RF16 9595 and K4s Pacific 3750 outside the Northumberland roundhouse. The K4 carries the identity of sister 1737, the prototype K4 which was scrapped in the 1950s. Returned to her true number, 3750 is today at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania." Engine #3750 was built in Juniata during March of 1920 and was in active service at least until August of 1957.

In this context, it's pulling a mixed-cargo local freight train westward on the railroad line between Milesburg and Montandon.
