WMR Viaduct, Wheeler Bottom |
Description: |
One of just a handful of remaining bridges that still have the Western Maryland Railway speed lettering visible. This was bridge number 2529 and was built in 1912 as part of the new Connellsville Extension. It was last painted in 1955, so it is a miracle this lettering is still here. Abandoned by WMR in the mid-70's, this bridge was abandoned for about 20 years but eventually found new life as part of the Great Allegheny Passage in 1995. |

WMR Pinkerton High Bridge |
Description: |
The Western Maryland Railway had one bridge at each end of what was called the "Pinkerton Horn", a horshoe shaped piece of land that was formed by the Casselman River. This is the higher of the two bridges. This was abandoned in 1975 after the merger with Chessie System. The piers were wide enough to accomodate a second track but that never actually came about. The fact this line was single tracked made the decision much easier for Chessie System to abandon it. This bridge was abandoned for several decades before finding new life as part of the Great Allegheny Passage. |

WMR Youghiogheny Bridge |
Description: |
This is sometimes called the bridge to nowhere, because the other end of it has been torn down, so it just drops off. The right side was started but never completed. All of the piers for bridges of the Western Maryland Railway were originally built to accommodate double tracks in the event that the railroad had enough traffic to warrant a second line. The WMR was in constant competition with the B&O railroad, so the extra track ended up never being built. This bridge and particular section of this railroad was abandoned in 1975, after the WM merger with Chessie System, when it was determined that this rail line was redundant and not needed. |

WMR Casselman Bridge |
Description: |
This is the bridge that took the Western Maryland Railway out of Confluence east towards the mountains. It has found a second life as part of the Great Allegheny Passage bike/hike trail. Below it is the Casselman River. The speed lettering on these bridges is withering away a little bit more every year. Photograph it while you still can. |

Quemahoning Viaduct (1) |
Description: |
Bridge Number 159. Located in Rockwood, Pa, just off of the Great Allegheny Passage. Built in 1913 by the B&O Railroad to connect the S&C Branch in Rockwood with a seven mile coal branch on the other side of the Casselman River. The Quemahoning Branch ran right alongside the Western Maryland Railway and control of the branch was actually given to them in 1950 when the B&O considered the line to be redundant. This bridge and line continued to be used in the CSX era up to about 1990 or so, when the last coal mine on the branch finally went out of business. |

WMR Relic |
Description: |
Found in the old WMR BoWest Yard, Dunbar, Pa. Abandoned since 1975. After a lot of thought, I have a theory that this is the top cut off from an oil barrel. But then it seems surprising that the barrel would have the name of the railroad right on it, along with a number. The mystery continues. |

Historical marker placed by the Pennsylvania DCNR at the location where the Western Maryland Railway's Ohiopyle Low Bridge used to be. I felt this was worth posting, as there is only one other Alco 2-8-0 from the Western Maryland on this website. The train was photographed sometime in the 1920's. |
