Title: |
PRR 6456, J-1, 1947 |
Description: |
Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide (converted to B&W) via Al Chione that was taken near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in May of 1947. The photographer is not identified. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6456, a J-1 (2-10-4) "Texas" built in Juniata during January of 1943 and retired in April of 1958 after just 15 years of revenue service. In this context, it's just come down the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve with a mixed-cargo freight train, and will soon pass under the 24th Street Bridge on its way to the Eastbound Receiving Yards in Altoona. Note the head-end brakeman ridin' the roofs on the train's sixth car! ("LouisFols"; #7 of 15) |
