CN 4721 |
Description: |
CN local works in the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 4 Dec. '17. The facility at right is currently home to Alliance Industries, 320 Appleton St., Menasha, WI, they apply powder coatings and manufacture sand cores. Founded at Waupaca, WI in 1979, they leased this facility in 2005. They later purchased the facility as well as the adjacent one at 313 Appleton St. The facility was home to Menasha Mill Supply Co. from at least 1939 through the 1970s, they primarily processed waste paper. It clearly used to receive rail service, but it does not seem to currently. The former MILW yard was located on the other (south) side of it; the building could be serviced by both railroads simultaneously. |

CN 4721, et al. |
Description: |
A CN local parallels W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. as it heads northeast with about 23 cars via former C&NW rails at Stroebe, WI on 10 Dec. '17. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI until 14 Apr. '16 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on this site)). Train was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna and had two locomotives, CN 4721 and CN 9473. The ongoing reconstruction of the Hwy. 41/ Hwy. 10/Hwy. 441 (a.k.a. the Tri-County Expressway) interchange (a.k.a. the Polish Connection) is visible in the background. The interchange opened to traffic on 30 Nov. '75. When Hwy. 10 was reconstructed and relocated ca. '97, this interchange was not simultaneously reconstructed to form a full interchange, but the ongoing, extensive expansion and reconstruction will make it a full interchange as well as increase traffic capacity. |

CN local emerges from behind All About Packaging, Inc., Warehouse #2, 1325 S. Perkins St., and approaches S. Perkins St. as it heads northeast through the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 14 Dec. '17. Train was preparing to drop off a cut of cars before continuing on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. There is a spur along the south side of the building, the wheel stops are partially hidden in the snow, but the turnout for the spur was removed years ago. The oldest part of the building was completed in Mar. '60, the new facility for the Fox Valley Sheltered Workshop. Inc. (started in '55 to created employment opportunities for the disabled). It became Valley Packaging Industries Inc. ca. mid- or late-'80s. After they moved to a new facility, this one has been home to Valley Planing Mill, Inc., followed by Perfect Patterns, Inc. It is currently a warehouse for All About Packaging, Inc., whose main facility is a couple of blocks away at 2200 W. Everett St. Founded at Appleton, WI in '96, they specialize in thermoformed packaging. |

IC 9601 and CN 4721 |
Description: |
A CN local returns to the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 17 Jun. '18. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the corporate overlords didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished. |

CN 4721 |
Description: |
CN 4721 crosses the North Channel (Menasha Channel) of the Fox River via the former joint MILW/SOO bridge as it heads northeast at Menasha, WI on 12 Aug. '18. This perspective would have only been obtainable with a boat, until the new Loop the Lake bridge opened to the public (the ribbon cutting ceremony for this and the similar bridge in Neenah was held 23 Jun. '18). The former Graphic Packaging International facility, originally Marathon Corp., 160 Washington St., can be seen on the south bank of the river in the background. The oldest part of the facility was built in Apr. '47 to manufacture cartons for food packaging. The land had previously been used for stave and lumber drying yards for Menasha Wooden Ware. The facility operated continuously until the end of '16, when Graphic Packaging International abandoned 228 hard working Americans by moving production out-of-state. The Coveris facility, historically Marathon Corp. (originally Menasha Printing & Carton Co.), 271 River St., is partially visible on the north bank of the river at left. The piers supporting the former C&NW bridge (also in use by CN) are partially visible under this bridge. At left, a fisherman or two are plying their luck in the shallows. |

A CN local crosses the former joint MILW/SOO bridge over the South Channel (Neenah Channel) of the Fox River at Neenah, WI on 12 Aug. '18. This was my first encounter with a train here since the new Loop-the-Lake bridge opened to the public (the ribbon cutting ceremony for this and the similar bridge in Menasha was held 23 Jun. '18). The pair of new bridges are part of Neenah and Menasha's Loop-the-Lake project to connect existing recreational trails in the Twin Cities. This new view of the railroad bridge is interesting, but I will miss the once panoramic view of this bridge from the river bank. The Neenah-Menasha YMCA, Island Shores Retirement Community, N. Commercial St. Bridge, and Neenah Paper mill (an active rail customer) are visible in the background to the right. |

A CN local bisects the intersection of S. Outagamie St. and W. Train was headed back from Little Chute and Kaukauna and was slowing to halt in front of the depot/yard office. The rails leading to the left are the yard lead. Carter's Caboose, 1428 W. 2nd St., a small, old, rail side tavern, stands at right. It dates to at least 1930, when it was a soft drink establishment owned by Hubert J. Merkel and August F. Brandt (Prohibition was still in effect). By ’36 it was a tavern operated by Albert Giesen, owned by Mrs. Gletchen Merkel. By ’38 it was Bob’s Tavern, still owned by Mrs. Merkel. By ’67 it was the Junction Tavern, owned by at least two different people until at least ‘71. At some point in the ‘70s it became Pete’s Junction (possibly Palomino Pete’s Junction). It was called Netticoat Junction ca. the ‘90s (owned by Joanne M. ‘Nettie’ Nett). |

The former Appleton Wood Products Co. factory, now part of the Miller Electric facility, can be seen beyond Carter's Caboose. Built in 1916, the walls include some intricate brickwork. The keystones above the windows (now concealed) depict bowling pins. Of course, all of the interesting brickwork, painstakingly crafted by skilled masons 102 years ago, has been defaced and obscured with cheap metal siding, which Miller Electric applied at some point after they acquired the historic facility ca. 1975. |

CN 9486 and CN 4721 |
Description: |
A CN local crosses the W. Lawrence St. grade crossing and passes the recently closed S. Locust St. grade crossing as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 17 Mar. '19. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna. The S. Locust St. grade crossing was closed as part of Appleton's quest for so-called quiet zone status. The "Do Not Enter" signs (there is one on the far side of the tracks as well) were put up in an attempt to discourage distracted drivers from trying to drive down the railroad tracks. |
