Top Left-Hand Photo: Stopped at the Altoona Passenger Station is the PRR's "Aerotrain," built by General Motors during July of 1955. Top Right-Hand Photo Caption: "An eastbound passenger train, headed by EP-22 #5710 (EMD E-8), is about to go under the 12th. St. bridge in Altoona, after passing through the station's train shed." Shown here is PRR engine #5710, an EP-22 built by GM-EMD in 1952 and rated at 2,250 horsepower.

All were built by the American Locomotive Company. #9619 is an AF-16 built in 1951 and rated at 1,600 horsepower. Bottom Left-Hand Photo: Shown here is the PRR's "Aerotrain" built by General Motors during July of 1955. Top Right-Hand Photo: Shown here is PRR engine #8826, an AS-16M built by the American Locomotive Company in 1951 and rated at 1,600 horsepower. Middle Right-Hand Photo: Shown here is PRR-Railway Express Car #7480. Bottom Right-Hand Photo: Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #8606 and #8608. Both are APS-24MS's built by the American Locomotive Company in 1955 and rated at 2,400 horsepower each.

Description:  Here is page nine of a 12-page camera study entitled "Horseshoe Curve Pictorial." It was published originally in the Winter 2004 issue of "The Keystone" magazine, page 40. Middle Photo, Partial Caption: "New York-to-Pittsburgh Aerotrain, in the summer of 1956." PRR's "Aerotrain" was built by General Motors during July of 1955, but lasted only a year or so before being withdrawn from service. Bottom Photo, Partial Caption: "Centipede #5834 assisting a westbound freight up Horseshoe Curve, circa 1956." Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5834 was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as a BP-60 rated at 3,000 horsepower in February of 1948, was later regeared and reclassified as 2,500 horsepower BH-50, and retired in April of 1962. Also visible is PRR N-5 caboose #477724. Both photos by Ken Murry.
