It appears to have a pipe running along the top of the long hood and up the exhaust stack. If anyone knows the purpose of that pipe, please leave a comment. My best guess would be a crankcase breather pipe. |

AT&SF RSD5 2134 |
Description: |
Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railway RSD5 2134 at La Junta, Colorado on August 17, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler+ On the date of this photo, number 2134 was the station switcher at La Junta, and has just moved the power to the waiting eastbound Train Number 24, The Grand Canyon, and is about to be cut off. According to the book, "Moving Mail And Express By Rail", by Edward M. DeRouin, the Santa Fe had the US Mail contract between Chicago and Los Angeles. Working Railway Post Office (RPO) cars were required on certain trains between Chicago, Kansas City, La Junta, Albuquerque, and Los Angeles. However, not all trains were required to have a RPO west of La Junta. In this case, the RPO was removed from westbound Train #23, The Grand Canyon. Upon arrival of eastbound Train #24, the switcher removed the power, set it out, switched the RPO onto the head end, and placed the power back on the train (seen here). The Grand Canyon will continue on to Kansas City, where this procedure will be repeated, and a second RPO will be added for the final leg of the trip to Chicago. The mail contract required 60 linear feet of RPO space between La Junta and Kansas City and 90 feet between Kansas City and Chicago. The Santa Fe kept spare RPO's at La Junta and Kansas City (and likely other locations) in the event one was bad ordered or rejected by the Post Office, and the Post Office would levy fines if the contract was not fulfilled. Postal employees could (and did) reject RPO cars if they deemed them to be in an unacceptable condition. The Post Office always collected the fines because they deducted them from the bill the railroad sent to them for the RPO services. |

AT&SF RSD5 2134 |
Description: |
AT&SF RSD5 2134 at La Junta, Colorado on August 17, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in June 1953 (c/n 80603) it was retired June 18, 1969 and traded to EMD for credit on a SD45 order. On the date of this photo, number 2134 was the station switcher at La Junta. The Santa Fe had a total of 10 RSD4's and 53 RSD5's. The RSD5 (Alco Specification E1664), at fifty-six feet, five and one quarter inches, was six inches longer than the RSD4 (Alco Spec. E1663). Although I have no hard evidence (yet) one source indicates that the AT&SF RSD5's were equipped with dynamic brakes, and the vents in the short hood, as well as the alternate placement of the numberboard on the short hood suggests it might be true. |

AT&SF RSD5 2135 |
Description: |
AT&SF RSD5 (Alco spec. E-1664) 2135 at Colorado Springs, Colorado on August 19, 1964, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in June 1953 (c/n 80604) and delivered in the "zebra stripe" paint scheme, it was renumbered to 9135 August 13, 1970, traded to EMD during 1972 on a SD45-2 order. The month this locomotive was built marked the introduction of the GE Model RD-3 water-cooled turbocharger on Alco's 12-cylinder Model 244 prime mover, which replaced GE's RD-1 air-cooled turbo. The spotting feature is the exhaust stack, which was oriented length-wise to the hood in the case of the RD-1, and cross-wise (as seen here) in the case of the RD-3. The RD-3 was replaced in production during September 1954 with Alco's own design, the Model 510 for 12-cylinder engines and Model 710 for 16-cylinder engines. I have not (yet) figured out what that extra pipe is running along the top of the hood and up the side of the exhaust stack, nor why the numberboard on the short hood was relocated. |

Thos is the rear view, the AT&SF had their RSD5's set up short hood forward. A total of 204 RSD5's were built by Alco between March 1952 and March 1955. The Santa Fe and Southern Pacific were the largest operaors of the RSD5 with 53 on the AT&SF and 64 on the SP. However, by 1959 the SP traded 21 of their RSD5's back to Alco for RSD12's. The Santa Fe employed its large fleet of RSD's nainly in New Mexico and Colorado in many roles. The appearance of Second Generation power in the 1960's found the AT&SF RSD fleet rapidly retired. I was in Colorado Springs wdth my parents (I'm 16 at the time of the photo) and we we're heading back home on the Denver Zephyr connection. I believe this locomotive was substituting for an ailing'Baldwin VO-1000 2218, which was laid up and off to the right. The AT&SF and the C&S had switching agreements at the time, and the AT&SF was responsible for switching at Colorado Springs. |

Description: |
AT&SF RSD5 2151 at La Junta, Colorado on August 17, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in June 1953 (c/n 80598) as 2151 (2nd) it was retired and traded to EMD on a SD45 order September 22, 1969. The AT&SF rostered both RSD4's (10 units) and RSD5's (53 units), the mechanical difference being a larger main generator (GE model GT 566 on the RSD5). The external spotting difference is the presence of the intercooler pipes placed above the air tanks on the RSD5. The RSD5 could be set up to have the long hood or the short hood as the forward end, in this case, the short hood is front. |

SP RSD5 2865 |
Description: |
Southern Pacific Alco RSD5 units 2865, 2859 and 2867 were on an eastbound transfer run on the Southern Railway’s OUTER BELT, between the Elysian Fields Avenue overpass and L&N JUNCTION. The train delivered 39 cars to the L&N at L&N JUNCTION and then continued on to the Southern's OLIVER YARD with 82 cars. The 2865 showed evidence of its recent renumbering from Texas & New Orleans 164. It had been built in October 1953, was retired in July 1969 and was used as trade-in credit to EMD. |

SP RSD5 5298 |
Description: |
SP RSD5 5298, Ogden, Utah, October 3, 1958, photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. The SP was the largest owner of the RSD5, with the SP proper owning 36 units, and subsidiary T&NO owning 24. Some units, including this one, were traded back to Alco in 1960 on an order of RSD12's, with some of the trade-in components reused on the RSD12 order, notably the trucks. Locomotive #'s 5294-5307 and #'s 5336-5339 were set up long hood forward (front), and #'s 5445-5507 (later #'s 2871-2885) were set up with the short hood as front. On the SP, units set up with the long hood as front indicated their intended service as switchers/branch line locomotives, and those set up with the short hood as front indicated their intended service was as road helpers. This particular RSD5 was built in 1953, SP class DF-115. |
