Description: |
Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide via Al Chione that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1957. The photographer is not identified. Shown here is Great Northern Railroad engine #5014, a Class Y-1 (1-C-C-1) boxcab built by the American Locomotive Company in February of 1930 and sold to the Pennsylvania Railroad in August of 1956. In this context, it's just arrived in Altoona to undergo modifications to make it suitable for helper duty on the PRR's electrified lines. Dominating the background are structures belonging to the PRR's 12th Street Car Shops; they're directly across the tracks from Altoona's Passenger Station. |
