DH 4-6-6-4 #1524 - Delaware & Hudson |
| Description: |
This massive and beautiful beast of a locomotive was built by Alco-Schenectady in September of 1942. An interesting and sad note was on the back of the photo. it states"Delware & Hudson #1524 at Carbondale, PA taken 10-24-1953 on RRE trip to Ninevah, NY. This loco went on scrap line next day." According to Alco-Schenectady records, the loco was actually sold for scrap in August of 1953 so the trip would have been its last hurrah after serving the DH for only 11 years.. Specs - class J, 69" drivers, impressive 285 psi boiler pressure, four 20.5x32" cylinders, engine wt of 600,000 lb & tractive effort of 95,800 lb. The photo was taken by Frank M. Seiffert Jr. |

This is a sad photo of once powerful DMIR 2-10-2 #508 and its sisters all sitting in the scrap line at the Proctor, MN after being sold for scrap in 1959, This powerful locomotive was built by Alco-Brooks in January of 1919 as Duluth, Missabee & Northern 2-10-2 #508 but was absorbed into the DMIR roster in 1938 as DMIR #508. The loco lasted in heavy service in long ore drags for nearly 40 years until being sold for scrap in 1959. Original specs - E-1 class, 57" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 27x32" cylinders, engine wt of 352,000 lb and tractive effort of 69,600 lb. The final RJ Corman op that I had left to shoot around the area was the twice-a-month SPEG operation between Lima and Elgin, OH. This section serves two customers; a foam place in Spencerville and Mercer-Landmark in Elgin. Because it is only the two customers, the train is not ran very often and can be hard to predict when it will run. It seems to be the 1st or 2nd and 4th Wednesday or Thursday of every month though. I picked the very first Wednesday of the month based on some info I had gotten, and sure enough when I arrived the engine was fired up in Lima and ready to head west. I went down to the crossing just west of where it was parked. Soon enough, I heard it blow for the crossing, but there was no movement. The engineer keyed up the conductor who was driving in his car and told him that he couldnt build any amps on the engine so he was going to restart. The restart did not work either. And with that, the conductor came back and grabbed the engineer, the train was tied down, and it didnt move the rest of the day. As disappointing as that was, Lima still has plenty of other action going on around it usually, and CSX seemed fairly busy at the moment, so I decided to head north to get some CPL shots. Thankfully, I did manage to get one shot of the Corman spilling exhaust where it was parked at East Town Road. |

| Description: |
Talk about "one long drink of water" as diesels go, this massive DT66-2000 loco was built by Baldwin in May of 1948 originally as EJE 111. Although the length is listed as 74', it appears so much longer than that! Itwas renumbered in January of 1958 to EJE #711. After nearly 22 years of service, the loco was retired in February of 1970. No date, location or photographer was listed for this photo so approximates were used. |
