Rebuild Leader at Plank
Title:  Rebuild Leader at Plank
Description:  One of NJ Transit's 13 ex-CNJ GP40Ps leads Train #1630 east on the Pascack Valley Line. The locomotive is one of a handful of these thirteen 49-year old veterans to have been overhauled for non-revenue service. Thanks to a shortage of cab cars some of them have made a brief return to passenger service until more cabs are released from the PTC program.

Off Goes the Santa Train
Title:  Off Goes the Santa Train
Description:  The annual "Railmen for Children" Santa Train departs Hoboken for Newark, The Oranges, Denville and Montclair with a trainload of children from schools all across the area. The children aboard this train are treated with gifts, music, food and a visit from Santa. The entire trip is made possible by the employee operated Railmen for Children charity and cooperation by NJ Transit who has been providing a train to the event every year since 1983. The equipment used and the people involved have changed over the years but one thing remains the same: The Santa Drumhead. This hand-painted drumhead has been affixed to the cab car of every Railmen for Children Santa Train since the very beginning and will continue to make its annual appearance for many years to come!

Pressed Into Passenger
Title:  Pressed Into Passenger
Description:  As NJ Transit struggles to comply with the federally mandated Positive Train Control requirements many cab cars have become unavailable as they are retrofitted with the new PTC systems. In order to maintain service locomotives have been acting as "cab cars" on the east ends of train all across the system. Sometimes those engines used are those normally reserved for non-revenue work trains such as seen here. Eastbound Train #1204 is seen here just after crossing the Hackensack River at Upper Hack drawbridge and was lead by one of four GP40-2s on the NJ Transit roster. These engines are usually assigned as work and protect power to outlying terminals such as Dover, Long Branch and Morrisville and have rarely been used to power scheduled revenue passenger trains.
