DUPX Tank Car 12405
Title:  DUPX Tank Car 12405
Description:  E.I. Du Pont de Nemours 8-axle tank car DUPX 12405 was one of five cars built by AMF in May and June 1970 as DUPX 12401-12405. Most photos of these cars show their later appearance, after their insulation and outer jacket had been removed and the cars went into ethylene glycol service; but this image illustrates their original, insulated appearance. As built, this 38,273-gallon car had a LT WT of 162,000 pounds and a LD LMT of 364,000 for a gross rail load of 526,000; but removing the jacket reduced its LT WT to 143,200 pounds and increased its LD LMT to 382,800. Car 12403 disappeared from the Equipment Register in April 1991, but the other four operated into the 21st century. They finally went into storage in December 2007 and were scrapped by Schnitzer Steel in January 2010. The 12405 was dismantled at Dothan, Alabama while the other three were cut up at Cartersville, Georgia.

8 axle tank car seen
Title:  8 axle tank car seen
Description:  An 8 axle tank car, sometimes referred to as a "Whale on Rails", is seen in Columbia AL on the Chattahoochee Bay RR. Information from the past few weeks indicates that many, if not all, of these cars are being retired and scrapped. This one is stenciled "Do Not Load. Moving to be Dismantled" which seems to verify this. There capacity in enormous, this one having a load limit of 382,800 pounds and able to carry over 38,000 gallons. For perspective, a large over the road truck used to deliver gasoline usually holds around 9000 gallons.

8 axle tank car seen
Title:  8 axle tank car seen
Description:  This shot shows the enormous capacities of this 8 axle tank car. These numbers would indicate that a fully loaded car would weigh a total in excess of 525,000 pounds!!! Or roughly 260 tons. This shot also shows the sad news that the car appears to be at the end of the road.

8 axle tank car seen
Title:  8 axle tank car seen
Description:  This shot shows the date this car was built, June 1970. These cars are being retired now. Is it due to old age or have they become too expensive to maintain in comparison to a newer car???

Title:  8 axle tank car seen
Description:  This shot shows the capacity in gallons of this mammoth car. A typical tanker truck used to deliver gasoline holds around 9000 gallons meaning this one rail car holds more than 4 over the road tanker trucks. Amazing.

Description:  This shot shows the handbrake area of an 8 axle tank car seen recently in Columbia AL. Note the chain has a "splitter" that seems to allow the hand brake to be set on both sets of trucks under this end of the car.
