AN AGED DECK GIRDER BRIDGE RESTS ON AN OLD FLAT CAR WITH IDLER FLATS AT EACH END. THIS WAS SITTING "IN THE YARD" IN NEW CASTLE JUST OFF 16TH STREET AND INDIANA AVE, BY THE ICE HOUSE BAR. NS BEGAN REPLACING THE LIGHTER AND OLDER BRIDGES ON THE NEW CASTLE SUB CULMINATING IN THE REPLACEMENT OF THE BRIDGE OVER THE BIG BLUE RIVER OVER THANKSGIVING WEEKEND IN 1999. BRIDGES ON THE PRR LEG TO CINNCINATI WERE ALREADY RELATIVELY HEAVY COMPARED TO THE LAKE ERIE & WESTERN ERA BRIDGES ON THE FORMER NICKEL PLATE (TO MUNCIE/FT WAYNE). THIS BRIDGE DATES FROM THE LAKE ERIE & WESTERN ERA (PRIOR TO 1922). MY UNCLE, WHO DIED IN 1993 CALLED IT THE LEAVE EARLY AND WALK |
