Former glory, now a rusty dead track         
This is the ex-SAL mainline between Savanna and Jacksonville. You can tell from the heavy welded rail that this used to be a mainline that was in good shape. In the late 1980's this line was severed as a through route and all the CTC was removed. Behind me the tracks start to be used again by the Riceboro Southern railway which runs between Riceboro and Savannah, GA

Ken Roble General I have been here too. This area was called Interstate by the railroad. I'm not sure how far down the tracks actually go before they leave off. Its a shame this line had to be reduced to a branch line. 12/23/2005 9:08:29 PM

Eugene Cain General Here's some information you might finf interesting. A study was done in the early 1980s to determine the feaseability of this route. The main problem was the trestle across the Altamaha River just north of Everett. The decision was made in 1984 to retire the route. Traffic was routed to the nearby A Line in mid 1985...well, what was left running anyway. 175/176 were the Hotshot Pig Trains that had run the Everett Sub and a few locals. It is too bad because this would have been the perfect route for all those Coal Trains we see now. The track was removed early in 1986 from Riceboro to Thalmann. The line south of Bladen survived a few more years, although they had permission to sbandon it too. That part was abandoned from Bladen to Kingsland in late 1989. I saw one of the last trains to use the route south of Bladen late in October of 1989..just weeks before it shut down. The Signal maintainer that removed the signals from the Everett Sub lives just up the street from me and told me th 4/17/2010 1:37:50 PM

Eugene Cain General the story of the demise of the everett Sub. The Trestle across the Altamaha River was in bad shape and the RR decided it was too much money to spend to keep both mainlines operating...so the A Line was kept and the S Line abandoned. 4/17/2010 1:40:27 PM
Eugene Cain General I have since learned SCL had planned to keep this route open and repair the Trestle but then the CSX merger happened and upper Chessie management pretty much took over here and this is the result. The SAL is fragmented today. Long live the Seaboard. 8/4/2012 5:53:31 PM
