Southern Railway GP38-2 5016 at about 47th Street in Chicago, Illinois on March 7, 1987, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This was one of the last photographs I shot in the Chicago area. I was moving to Arkansas, after about 40 years of living in Chicago and suburbs, to take care of my recently widowed mother. Another impedus for moving was that I had recently been outplaced by my employer when the company was purchased by another and the Chicago offices were closed. I was running around Chicago shooting photos at some of the locations I have been to in the 1960's and this was one of them. I was approached by a security officer and I explained my presence. He responded by pulling a gun and sternly advising me to depart posthaste (his exact words were, shall we say, quite colorful). I complied and later learned that this location had been the site of several boxcar break-in's and burglaries. To paraphrase Bob Dylan, the times they were a-changin'. |
