NS 5659
Trailing unit on this NS local was another rebuilt GP38-2 with a different heritage than the locomotive up front. NS 5659 was one of four GP38AC locomotives constructed by EMD in the early winter of 1971 for freight service on the Lehigh Valley Railroad. Originally LV 313, this unit along with its three sisters could be found at the head end of most heavy freight consists on the LV main line between Oak Island in Newark, NJ and Buffalo, NY. Acquired by Conrail in 1976, the unit was renumbered CR 7659 and would continue to serve on main line freight. NS would gain this unit to its roster in 1999 following the CR split and rebuilt it into its present configuration in 2006.
