AHC. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide by an unidentified photographer that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 5 June 1949. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #5858 and a "B" unit whose number is not recorded. Both are EP-20's built by GM-EMD and rated at 2,000 horsepwer each. #5858 was built in February of 1948 and retired in March of 1967 after just 19 years of revenue service. They are pulling a passenger train down the Allegheny Mountains and around the Curve on their way to Altoona, Harrisburg, and points East. This photo comes from a slide set distributed by Marlo Industries of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. |
