CSX 598 and 443 are backing a long cut of wood chip cars to a local lumber mill at Allendale, SC just as the sun is rising. This section of curved track originally belonged to Southern Railway. When Norfolk Southern abandoned the line from Edmund (just south of Columbia, SC) to Furman, SC in the late 1980s, this section of line was left in place to continue providing rail service to the lumber mill. When Southern ran trains on this line, the route crossed CSX at Allendale. The temperature was in the upper 20s when I took this photo so there's a heavy frost on the ground. |
