Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Fred Kern that was taken just West of the Brick Yard Crossing in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 23 July 1955. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #8958, a BS-24M transfer unit built by Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton in October of 1951, rated at 2,400 horsepower, and retired in July of 1966 after just 15 years of revenue service. In this context, it's hauling a fully-loaded mineral train down the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to the Eastbound Receiving Yards in Altoona. ("Tchowee"; #15 of 39) |
