FSF. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1963. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8670, #8664, and another unit whose road number is not recorded. All are AS-18AM road switchers built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8670 was constructed in March of 1958, while #8664 was built in February of the same year. They're serving as tail-end pushers on an ore train heading up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they'll uncouple and return to East Altoona for yet another helper/pusher run up "The Mountain." In the mid-distance is the 7th Street Bridge; on the right are several of the PRR's Altoona Car Shop buildings. The photographer's name and the date are not recorded. Photo taken from the 4th Street Footbridge. |
