Here is an original 35mm color slide by an unidentified photographer that was taken in Northumberland, Pennsylvania, in October of 1969. Shown here (L to R) are an unidentified Penn Central "Geep," Pennsylvania Railroad engine #520, and six more vintage steam locomotives from the PRR's historical collection. The context is provided by Robert Emerson & Kurt Bell in their article entitled "The Pennsylvania Railroad's Historical Collection" that was published in the Fall 1996 issue of "Vintage Rails" magazine, page 84. They write that "by September, the Penn Central had decided to preserve the integrity of the collection by sending all of it to the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. In October 1969, a second 'train of locomotives' left for Strasburg, arriving October 10. This train consisted of the L1s, K4s, E6s, E2 (7002), B6sb, A5s, H3 (1187), the 'John Bull' replica, coach No. 1651, and wooden baggage car No. 6076." |
