Here is an image of the East Portal of the Allegheny Portage Railroad's Staple Bend Tunnel, c. 1946. It's located at the top of Inclined Plane #1 near Conemaugh, Pennsylvania. Work began in November of 1831 and was completed in June of 1833. It's double-tracked, 901 feet in length, and cost just $37,498.85! It's since been reopened and the walls reinforced; walk-through tours are now conducted by the National Park Service. The photographer's name and the date are not recorded. |
