Here is a photo by H.W. Pontin via Rail Photo Service that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in July of 1940. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6843 and an "I" Class (2-10-0) "Decapod" whose road number is not recorded. #6843 is an M-1 (4-8-2) "Mountain" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during September of 1926 and retired in March of 1957 after 31 years of faithful service. In this context, they're passing the Kittanning Point Station with a manifest freight train that's about to round the Curve on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. Partially visible in the center is four-track Signal Bridge #2415. John S. Fisher Collection; #1 of 14. |
