Here is a photo by H.W. Pontin via Rail Photo Service that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in July of 1940. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5430, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during February of 1927 and retired in November of 1948 after 21 years of faithful service. In this context, it's about to pass the Kittanning Point Station with a passenger train that's on it's way down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona and points East. Photo taken from four-track Signal Bridge #2416. John S. Fisher Collection; #4 of 14. |
