Here is a photo by H.W. Pontin via Rail Photo Service that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in July of 1940. Shown here (L to R) are three unidentified Pennsylvania Railroad steam locomotives. The one at the left is an "I" Class (2-10-0) "Decapod" serving as a pusher engine for a westbound mixed-cargo freight train. The two at the right ~ an "M" Class (4-8-2) "Mountain" and a "K" Class (4-6-2) "Pacific" ~ are rounding the Curve with a passenger train on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Pittsburgh and points West. The name of the railroad enthusiast pictured at the right is not recorded. John S. Fisher Collection; #8 of 14. |
