Volkmer. Here is an original 35mm color slide by William D. Volkmer that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 30 August 1959. Shown here (L to R) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5821 and another unit whose road number is not recorded. Both are BH-50's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as BP-60's rated at 3,000 horsepower each, but later regeared and classified as BH-50's rated at 2,500 horsepower each. #5821 was constructed in February of 1948 and retired in September of 1962 after just 14 years of revenue service. |
