KCS Train No. 54
Kansas City Southern train No. 54 was stopped on the Norfolk Southern at Marconi Drive in New Orleans. The train was powered by SD40M-2 620 and SD50 707 and was on its way from the CSX Gentilly Yard to Labarre Road in suburban Metairie, where a KCS road crew would replace the NS yard crew. All of the KCS SD40M-2 units were rebuilt with both a nose-mounted Oscitrol light and ditch lights but the Oscitrol lights were eventually removed. On the front of the train was a block of rocket motor cars transporting spent solid fuel booster sections from the Kennedy Space Center to the Morton-Thiokol plant on the Union Pacific in Corinne, Utah.
