IC E9A 2021 |
Description: |
Illinois Central E9A 2021 was on the service track at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal with E9B 2100. The locomotives had come in that morning on the PANAMA LIMITED and would head back north at 4:15PM. With the beginning of Amtrak on 1 May, this train was discontinued and left for the very last time exactly three weeks after this photo was taken. The 2021 had been built as IC E8 4029 in May 1952 and was upgraded into an E9 in February 1969. It would be sold to Amtrak as the 436 in February 1973, and it was the only IC E-unit purchased by Amtrak. It was retired in 1981, sold to Precision National Corp. in May 1982 and subsequently scrapped. |
