PRR 4398, I-1S, 1939 |
Description: |
Hollidaysburg. Here is a photo by an unidentified photographer that was taken in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, on 24 May 1939. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #4398, an I-1S built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during February of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in April of 1944, and retired in 1960 after 37 years of faithful service. In this context, it's coupled behind a cabin car and will soon begin pushing a freight train up the Allegheny Mountains via the Muleshoe Curve to Gallitzin, where it will be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona for further assignments. |

PRR 4398, I-1SA, 1957 |
Description: |
Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide via Al Chione that was taken in Enola, Pennsylvania, on 5 May 1957. Prominent here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #4398, an I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapod" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during February of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in April of 1944, and retired in 1960 after 37 years of faithful service. Looks to me like the engineer is loading his gear in preparation for another run. The photographer's name and the numbers of the other locomotives pictured are not recorded. ("LouisFols"; #4 of 15) |
