Built in 1901 by Alco-Schenectady, there were derailing difficulties when backing among other operating problems so only three were purchased. Original specs - class 988, 57" drivers, 225 psi boiler pressure, 17.5x34" high pressue cylinders, 30x34" low pressure cylinders, engine weight 259,800 lb, tractive effort of 52,133 lb. In 1917, the ATSF shops simplified and superheated these two members of class 988 decapods. They were retired in 1938. Photo is from Harold K Vollrath collection |

ATSF 2-10-0 #989 - Atchison, Topeka & Santa FE |
Description: |
This was one of only three 2-10-0 decapods in the 988 class. An order for more was cancelled due to derailing tendencies when backing. Built by Alco-Schenectady in 1901, the three locos lasted until 1938. This photo has been incorrectly labeled as 1945 so an approximate date was used. No location was given nor a photographer either.. |
