Standing tall in the corn
Title:  Standing tall in the corn
Description:  Tunkhannock Viaduct, the worlds largest reinforced concrete structure, still in service over 100 years after the first train rolled across it, dominates the scene above this snow covered cornfield. At 2600 feet long and 240 feet high, it dominates the whole town.

Rock overpass
Title:  Rock overpass
Description:  Some things never go away. Railroad heralds on bridges are often one of them, as a lot of railroad bridges dont get repainted on any kind of schedule. This one was in West Liberty Iowa, as if the Rock Island never went away 26 years prior.

Big time
Title:  Big time
Description:  The grain elevator at Dodge City is a huge structure, as it is used to store and ship large quantities of grain for miles around the area. We see a morning view along the Santa Fe main, which is often quiet since most of the freight goes via Amarillo.

Prairie skyscrapers
Title:  Prairie skyscrapers
Description:  Most towns on the plains had at least one of these tall, concrete structures to house grain to be shipped. They were often the tallest man made structures for miles, and out here on the high plains, they could be seen from a long way off. While these elevators on the Cimarron Valley, a former Santa Fe line, were not the largest in the state by any means, they still had a commanding presence over the surrounding landscape.

Where the money comes from
Title:  Where the money comes from
Description:  Railroads need stuff to haul if they are going to generate any revenue. One of the prime sources is grain, which is taken from elevator to mill, though sometimes to port. Here in Coffeyville, this feed mill was providing a reason for the railroads existence.

Big place
Title:  Big place
Description:  Coffeyville was once an important point on the Missouri Pacific, which had a yard and offices here, as it was a division point. Now, the UP still runs here on the line from Kansas City to Little Rock, but Watco runs all the other lines here, one of them former Santa Fe, which also came to town. Still, the heritage remains intact, at least on the side of the building.

Not a railroad structure
Title:  Not a railroad structure
Description:  But important to the railroad nonetheless. This grain elevator at Yukon OK once was served by the Rock Island; happily, this part of the Choctaw Route was still seeing local service from UP the day we were there. Out here in granger country, grain shipments were a big part of the railroad scene. This elevator is well preserved, with good signage, making it an attractive photographic subject.

Big station
Title:  Big station
Description:  For a small place-there isnt much here in todays world, at least as far as the railroad is concerned, and what is sits mostly off the Turnpike interchange, yet it had a substantial station. This must have been someplace back in the day. The wood frame station stands as a reminder of those days on the MKT. It wont be here long, though.

Well hidden
Title:  Well hidden
Description:  The MKT station at Big Cabin has not seen a train in many years, and has been left to the elements, as have many stations around the country. As a result, the shrubbery has grown up, in this case, obscuring the station almost completely from the road side. Yes, there is a station in there. You can see the edge of the roof at the left of the bush.

Santa Fe station
Title:  Santa Fe station
Description:  The only passenger train in town stops here, at the former Santa Fe station, which still looks good in its art deco design. Union Station, once served by Frisco, MKT and the Rock Island, sits in an odd corner of the city, near I 40, devoid of track.

Panoramic view
Title:  Panoramic view
Description:  A view from our room at the Renaissance in downtown OKC yields this view of the Santa Fe station, where Amtraks train to Dallas originates. Most of the traffic is freight, though, the Texas Chief having long ago departed here for the last time. A northbound grain train rolls past, empties heading to Kansas City.

SP station
Title:  SP station
Description:  A 3/4 shot of the massive SP/Rock Island station. Even though the Rock owned the track to Santa Rosa, another 50 miles west, the operating change was here. This was also the terminus for Rock Islands Choctaw Route trains, which connected to the Golden State route about a mile to the east. The right of way can be seen from the US 54 overpass, and can be followed to some extent all the way to Amarillo. The Golden State route, named for the train that plied these rails from Chicago to LA, is still an active part of the UP system.

Title:  Wide view
Description:  This view from out in the parking lot-WAY out in the parking lot-gives a sense of the size of the station here. It was a division point, as well as a junction point, and the station reflected the importance of those aspects. I can just picture a pair of Rock E 7s along with an SP mate starting east for KC and Chicago.

Station and freight house
Title:  Station and freight house
Description:  The Southwest RR operates a former ATSF branch line out of Lordsburg NM, and has the office here at Hurley. The station is a large building, with a passenger section on the north end, and a large freight house. Its much larger than would appear necessary for a line that probably never had serious traffic density.

Attractive station
Title:  Attractive station
Description:  The former Santa Fe station at Stockton is looking good. It appears nicely kept, and the grounds are clean. For a place that made a name for itself on automobiles, California seems to have made its passenger rail attractive and useful, for the most part. Maybe they can teach someone at Amtrak HQ a thing or two.
