Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8664, #8675, and #8665. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company in 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8664 and #8665 were constructed in February, while #8675 was built in March. They're on their way back to East Altoona after completing another helper/pusher run up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and back. Description:  Here is page two of a two-page article entitled "Rush From Labrador." It was published originally in the July-August 1959 issue of "Pennsy" magazine, page 7. Top Right Photo Caption: "Extra locomotives in the middle and rear help ore train over mountain west of Altoona." Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #8675 and two more units whose road are not recorded. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8675 was constructed in March of 1958. Also visible are two open hopper cars: PRR #702470, as well as Cambria & Indiana Railroad #4459. Bottom Right Photo Caption: "Giant furnaces, ore pile, and dumper form background as trains reach Weirton Steel." Prominent here is PRR engine #8949, an LS-25M built by Lima-Hamilton in August of 1951, rated at 2,500 horsepower, and retired in July of 1966.

Description:  Here is a photo from an article entitled "Rush From Labrador." It was published originally in the July-August 1959 issue of "Pennsy" magazine, page 15. Visible in the foreground is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #8675, an AS-18AM built by the American Locomotive Company in March of 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower. Also visible near the apex of the Curve is Pennsylvania Railroad steam locomotive #1361, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during May of 1918 and retired in May of 1956.

Description:  Good Day. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad property in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, 25 July 1960. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #8663, #8657, and #8675. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8663 and #8675 were built in 1958, but #8657 was built in 1957. From here, they will pass the WYE Tower, climb the Allegheny Mountains via the Muleshoe Curve, and then merge with the westbound mainline at Gallitzin. On the far side of the Gallitzin tunnels, these pusher engines will uncouple and head back to East Altoona via the Horseshoe Curve for another run up the Allegheny Mountains. This photo was taken at the Juniata River Railroad Bridge, near Bedford Street and the Passenger Station. #12 of 12.

Description:  Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide via Al Chione that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 18 August 1963. The photographer is not identified. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8667, #8675, and #8658. All are AS-18AM road switchers built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8667 was built in February of 1958, #8675 was completed one month later, while #8658 was constructed in January of the same year. They're serving as tail-end pushers on an ore train rounding the Curve on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they'll uncouple and return to East Altoona for yet another helper-pusher run up "The Mountain." They are pulling a mixed-cargo train that originated in Hollidaysburg into the Altoona Yards, and are about to pass under the new 4th Street Bridge. Pulling a single N-5C cabin car, they have just passed under the 7th Street Bridge on their way to Hollidaysburg ~ where they'll pick-up a string of new and rebuilt freight cars and pull them up the New Portage Branch to Gallitzin and points West. #8663 and #8675 will lead, while #8655 and #8676 will push from the rear but uncouple at Gallitzin and return to East Altoona for yet another helper/pusher run up "The Mountain."
