Horseshoe Curve-1959. Here is an original photo that I took at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 03 September 1959. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #5881 and #8669. #5881 is an EP-20 built by GM-EMD in April of 1949 and rated at 2,000 horsepower. #8669 is an AS-18AM built by the American Locomotive Company in March of 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower. Together, they are pulling a westbound passenger train around the Horseshoe Curve up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. |

Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #5793, an unidentified E-8 unit, and #5881. All were built by EMD. #5793 is an EP-22 built in June of 1952 and rated at 2,250 horsepower. #5881 is an EP-20 built in April of 1949 and rated at 2,000 horsepower. They have just recently departed the Altoona Station with an 18-car passenger train, and are now heading to Harrisburg and points East. |
